Sexual & Reproductive Health Project
The project “Promoting Black Sexual and Reproductive Health” is aimed at increasing the capacity of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) programs and services across Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario to serve African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) communities, particularly women, 2SLGBTQI+ people, newcomers, and Black youth through healthcare provider (HCP) and community capacity building.
Anti-Black Racism Project
Our First Objective
By year 5 of the project in 2027, educational activities will have been delivered to 20 service providers in 4 regions of Canada to improve HIV service delivery to ACB populations as determined through improved scores on community ABR scorecards and self-reporting on ABR index, with 80% of 20 service providers participants reporting a strengthened capacity to provide culturally responsive and culturally safe STBBI prevention, testing, treatment and care services to ACB populations.
70% of 20 service providers participants reporting having implemented a policy or practice change by themselves or their organization to reduce anti-Black racism in their HIV services to improve cultural safety and stigma-free nature of STBBI testing, prevention, treatment, and ongoing care and support services they provide to ACB populations.
Our Second Objective
By year 5 of the project in 2027, CHABAC will have recruited and trained 50 ACB peers in 4 regions of Canada on effective evidence-based, culturally safe and culturally responsive HIV, hepatitis C or related STBBI prevention measures and services to strengthen their capacity to identify gaps in HIV services and advocate for their needs in their communities, with 80% ACB peers participants reporting an increased knowledge of effective evidence-based, culturally safe and culturally responsive HIV, hepatitis C or related STBBI prevention measures and services and 60% of ACB peers reporting an improved access to culturally safe and stigma free HIV services as a result of their work in advocating for their needs with service providers in their communities.
Expected Outcomes by 2025
- Increased knowledge of effective evidence-based HIV, Hep C and STBBI prevention measures among ACB populations and target audiences.
- Strengthened capacity (skills and abilities) of key populations and target audiences toprevent infection and to improve health outcomes related to STBBI.
Expected Outcomes by 2027
- Increased uptake of effective evidence based STBBI prevention measures among key populations.
- Improved cultural safety and stigma free nature of STBBI, prevention, testing, treatment, ongoing care and support services provided by target audiences.
HIV Prevention Strategy Project
Additionally, we have our 1Love1Stop intervention pop-ups, where we attend big and small events, for example a local event at a community center or Afrofest, and we distribute HIV self-test kits and other HIV prevention technologies, i.e. condoms, dental dams, information sheets etc. Finally, we are also working on developing an advocacy framework for delivery and national advocacy strategy based on status neutral approach, barrier reduction, Anti-Racism, Intersectionality, Anti-Oppression etc.
Over the past year, we have been able to develop our workshops and have begun carrying out the workshops. Further, we have all been attending numerous events and distributing HIV prevention technologies. We have been able to distribute thousands of HIV self-test kits through the hard work and dedication of our amazing team.
